Review A good idea--its utility far outweighs qualms purists have about students not reading every last item in the catalogue of ships. The translation is vigorous and readable. Not only does one get an excellent translation of both Homer's Iliad and Odyssey under one cover, but the selections included are infinitely better and longer than what one normally gets in anthologies of Greek literature.
For courses in which entire texts cannot be used, this is by far the best choice available today. The Essential Homer fills a long-felt need for an edition that offers a sizable selection of the books and passages most likely to be used in undergraduate courses. It's a wonderful help.
Martin, Stanford University. Great copy of Iliad and Odyssey. The Best of the Best of the Best By amybobamy Lombardo's translations of Homer are brilliant, energetic, and fun to read. While other translations are as dry and dusty as ancient Greek itself, Lombardo remarkably manages to bring it all to life, and reading both the Iliad and the Odyssey are as interesting and exciting as reading the most fascinating and lurid novel you've ever had in your hands.
This edition is abridged, but I found that only long, tedious descriptions of preparations for battles seemed to be missing. This is the ideal student text. Both the translations and the introductions are informed by the best recent scholarship. Readers will be introduced to the world in that the Odyssey was produced, to the text itself and to its origins in oral poetry. This volume gives a summary of the poem and examines its structure. The unity, values and techniques of the poem are clearly outlined, as are the reasons for its longstanding appeal.
